Installed versus ASP (Oracle)

It is October 2020. Our company is installed, we are considering ASP.

Our management have asked me to post a question on the forum to hear how this has impacted other companies budgetary planning / commitment / thoughts / track?

What are other companies doing ?

Are you bearing the costs of remaining and continuing installed?

Are you committed to ASP and in conversion soon?

Are you considering ASP conversion?

Are you considering other systems?

Would love to gather some feedback to take back to management. Hope you can help and are happy to share.

Thanks

Hi Matt,

Please take my opinion below with a grain of salt. Others may agree or may disagree with my statement

I think that there are some other considerations that the management team needs to think about in switching to ASP. Once you switch to ASP, you no longer have direct access to the Oracle database. You are now at the mercy of exporting data to CSV or Excel files, using their home grown ASP file transfer to move the data to a local machine to process. Or, you have to pay an extra fee to use Relius's antiquated SOAP based Connect APIs.

Not everything is bad with ASP. Your organization does not need to worry about upgrading Oracle licenses, servers or worry too much around downtime with a Service Level Agreement (SLA). In addition, the good news is that Relius is moving to Code Connect, which is using modern REST based APIs. However, I do not know if they have been released. Relius is also upgrading their database to Oracle Enterprise and they have stated multiple times that ASP users will not absorb the upgrade cost.

In closing, it appears Relius is pushing companies to the ASP model. However, I think that they have some work to do before they can provide the similar level of access as companies with installed do today.

I hope this helps your team to make a decision.
